{"id":441,"date":"2009-11-20T12:58:11","date_gmt":"2009-11-20T12:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hazards.org\/greenjobs\/blog\/?p=441"},"modified":"2009-11-20T13:18:18","modified_gmt":"2009-11-20T13:18:18","slug":"lead-poisoning-worldwide-set-to-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hazards.org\/greenjobs\/blog\/2009\/11\/20\/lead-poisoning-worldwide-set-to-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead poisoning worldwide set to rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-446\" title=\"child electronics\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hazards.org\/greenjobs\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/child-electronics1.jpg\" alt=\"child electronics\" width=\"481\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Widespread lead poisoning will result from the planned distribution of a billion computers to developing countries by technology companies and charities, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lead from batteries needed to power these computers will result in environmental contamination and harmful exposures unless some commonsense safeguards are taken,\u201d said Perry Gottesfeld, co-author of the study published in the <em>Journal of Cleaner Production<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research concludes that emissions from the lead batteries needed to power these computers will exceed 1,250,000 tons in the next decade,\u201d added Mr Gottesfeld, who is the executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.okinternational.org\/\">Occupational Knowledge International<\/a> (OK International) of San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIronically these efforts to narrow the \u2018digital divide\u2019 will increase lead emissions and offset any gains in educational achievement unless efforts are taken to reduce emissions from battery manufacturing and recycling,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The study, \u2018Plans to distribute the next billion computers by 2015 creates pollution risk,\u2019 says India alone is expected to gain 150 million new PC users by 2015 and most will utilise lead batteries for primary or backup power, or both.<\/p>\n<p>The increased production of computers and other electronic equipment has been credited with the recent global rise in lead production, which increased by 18 per cent between 2003 and 2007. Over half of refined lead used worldwide is already recycled, creating a potentially enormous occupational disease risk in a notoriously hazardous industry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Christopher R Cherry and Perry Gottesfeld.
