{"id":101,"date":"2009-08-18T12:23:39","date_gmt":"2009-08-18T11:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hazards.org\/greenjobs\/blog\/?p=101"},"modified":"2009-09-04T13:22:38","modified_gmt":"2009-09-04T12:22:38","slug":"global-unions-call-for-green-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hazards.org\/greenjobs\/blog\/2009\/08\/18\/global-unions-call-for-green-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Global unions call for green jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trade unions want both an effective UN climate pact and preservation of jobs in a shift to a green economy, a leader of a global labour group has said.<\/p>\n<p>More jobs could be created than are lost if governments are serious about promoting a switch from fossil fuels to a low-carbon economy, said Guy Ryder, general secretary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ituc-csi.org\/spip.php?article4192&amp;var_recherche=climate%20change\">International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Brussels-based ITUC, which represents 168 million workers in 155 countries, wants the new UN pact due to be agreed in Copenhagen in December to ensure a \u201cjust transition\u201d for workers to a greener economy.<\/p>\n<p>Ryder said many UN studies showed that a low-carbon future could be achieved by \u201cpolicies that would increase the quantity and quality of employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThere is going to have to be massive social protection and investment in adjustment\u201d\u00a0when making\u00a0a global shift from fossil fuels towards industries such as wind or solar power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trade unions want both an effective UN climate pact and preservation of jobs in a shift to a green economy, a leader of a global labour group has said.
