{"id":242,"date":"2009-10-07T14:17:07","date_gmt":"2009-10-07T13:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hazards.org\/blacklistblog\/?p=242"},"modified":"2009-10-07T16:23:01","modified_gmt":"2009-10-07T15:23:01","slug":"242","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hazards.org\/blacklistblog\/2009\/10\/07\/242\/","title":{"rendered":"Group calls for blacklisting inquiry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There should be a public inquiry into corrupt practices in the UK construction industry, workplace rights campaigners have said.<\/p>\n<p>A packed 6 October meeting at the House of\u00a0 Commons heard\u00a0the\u00a0inquiry demand endorsed unanimously by\u00a0MPs, leading human rights academics, barristers and blacklisted building workers.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was called by the <strong><em>Blacklist Support Group<\/em><\/strong> to discuss the recently exposed\u00a0covert illegal blacklisting of trade unionists by major UK building firms. Ian Kerr of the Consulting Association (and formerly the Economic League) was fined\u00a0 \u00a35,000 for his role in the blacklisting of trade unionists. So\u00a0far, however,\u00a0the 44 major construction\u00a0firms\u00a0\u00a0have incurred no penalty or sanction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the meeting, John McDonnell MP told the blacklisted workers:<em> <\/em>&#8220;This is one of the worst ever cases of organised abuses of human rights in the UK.\u00a0I fully support your campaign for justice and I will be raising the issue of a\u00a0public enquiry in parliament. There is already considerable support in the house.&#8221;<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nKeith Ewing, professor of public law at King&#8217;s College London<em><strong>, <\/strong><\/em>was highly critical of a the government&#8217;s proposed law to address blacklisting. &#8220;What is needed is an absolute legal tight not be be blacklisted, firm sanction against companies supplying information to the blacklist and financial compensation for every individual on the blacklist,&#8221; he told the meeting. &#8220;The proposed regulations as put out to consultation by BIS are so full of holes that they\u00a0are hardly worth the paper they are printed on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Colin Trousdale, a blacklisted electrician from Manchester, said: &#8220;This is not something that went on in the past: the blacklist is still being used today. I am not interested in the money,\u00a0I am interested in getting back to work.
